Battery Passport

Sustainability through Transparency

Battery Passport

Full data transparency throughout the entire lifecycle of a battery

The EU Green Deal has set a mandatory timeline requiring a digital passport for batteries with a capacity of over 2kW/h used for light means of transportation, electric or hybrid vehicles, as well as stationary energy storage by 2027. Manufacturers of batteries and battery-powered devices who produce within the EU or sell to EU (end) users are facing new challenges: they must collect and manage large amounts of data from all stages of the battery’s life cycle and its complex supply chain, ensure transparent insights into battery composition, performance, and environmental impact. Bosch Connected Industry has developed the Battery Passport to empower manufacturers with everything they need to maximize transparency and efficiency.

Sustainability through Transparency

Benefits at a glance:

Full efficiency, transparency, and traceability

Harmonized and centralized management of battery data over the entire life cycle

Regulatory compliance

Meets all EU requirements and industry-specific regulations regarding batteries

High scalability and reuse of data

Easy reuse of battery data and implementation of other product data for further use cases

Digital twin-powered solution meets regulatory requirements

Digital twin-powered solution meets regulatory requirements

The Battery Passport enables manufacturers to track and document the entire life cycle of their battery products and provide all legally required information to various stakeholder groups in full compliance with the upcoming milestones along the EU Green Deal – specifically the introduction of the mandatory battery passport. The solution introduces a new approach of dealing with large amounts of product data by utilizing the tools of Bosch Semantic Stack: a digital twin is created for each individual battery, based on the open-source IDTA standard, i.e. the Asset Administration Shell (AAS). This is done automatically via an ETL pipeline, and each twin is registered in the Digital Twin Registry for easy location and access. This way, all battery data is stored centrally, processed automatically, and distributed securely.

Future-proof automated processes

Future-proof automated processes

The Battery Passport provides maximum transparency and simultaneously reduces manual efforts by simplifying and automating processes. This ensures a high degree of efficiency even with a constantly growing data load through added products, data sources, or use cases. Furthermore, it is highly flexible: specific aspects can be updated dynamically and in a targeted manner without having to alter the entire system architecture. This allows for quick reaction times when changes in legislation or market guidelines occur. Additionally, the solution is freely scalable to further uses cases beyond the battery passport. The underlying data strategy can be used for all kinds of product data across their entire life cycle and ensures high added value with little additional effort.
